STANDARDIZED TESTING OPTIONS

Standardized testing is **NOT** required of Option 3 homeschool students in South Carolina.

However, your child's first experience with a standardized test should not be the SAT!

Upcountry Homeschool Association works diligently to provide Standardized Testing options for homeschoolers in the upstate. Again, testing is NOT REQUIRED to be a registered members of Upcountry Homeschool Association and no scores are stored by our system.

ACT

The ACT is a standardized test used for college admissions and scholarship decisions across the United States. It measures students' academic readiness for college with required English, Math, and Reading sections, and optional Science and Writing

ASVAB

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) isn’t just relevant for military careers; it offers valuable insights beyond the armed forces. Here’s how:

Career Guidance: Even if you’re not considering military service, your ASVAB score can guide you toward fields that align with your talents. Many civilian employers recognize its significance when evaluating candidates

Educational Pursuits: Taking the ASVAB exposes you to various subjects and areas of knowledge. It’s an opportunity to discover new passions and hone existing skills, which can influence future educational choices.

Math Skills: The ASVAB assesses math skills, which are beneficial in fields like finance or engineering, extending beyond military occupations1.

Remember, the ASVAB isn’t just a military test—it’s a tool that can unlock doors and provide clarity on potential career paths!

The ASVAB is offered to high school and post-secondary students as part of the ASVAB Career Exploration Program. The program provides tools to help students learn more about career exploration and planning, in both the civilian and military worlds of work. The ASVAB Career Exploration Program is free of charge

Upcountry Homeschool Association offers ASVAB testing in the fall of each school year. Our next testing is scheduled for Wednesday, September 17, 2025. to register please email upcountryhomeschoolassociation@gmail.com prior to August 22,2025. Include parents name/students name/grade level for the 2025-2026 school year/parent email You should receive an email confirmation within 24 hours.

PSAT

The PSAT is a standardized test that prepares students for the SAT and qualifies them for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Unlike the SAT, the PSAT is only given in October of each year in approved brick and mortar schools during school hours. Upcountry Homeschool Association has partnered with a local private school to allow a group of homeschoolers the privilege of taking the PSAT. We are currently working out the details for 2025, and the waiting list is already forming.

This is generally a very fast timeline and sells out quickly. If you would like to be added to the waiting list, please email upcountryhomeschoolassociation@gmail.com and include the parent's name and email, the students name and grade level for the 2025-2026 school year. You should receive an email confirmation within 24 hours. Being on the waiting list does not reserve your student a spot but rather ensures that you will receive the registration first. Seats are secured on a first registered and paid basis.

This is only for 10th and 11th grade students during the 2025-2026 school year.

SAT

Arguably the most well-known standardized college entrance exam in the U.S. SAT scores provide schools with a strong data point for comparing applicants.

The SAT is a three-hour multiple-choice test created and administered by the College Board. It covers reading, writing, and math, and is used to determine students’ preparedness for college.

The SAT is held seven times a year, typically on the first Saturday of the month. Students who want to send SAT scores to colleges must register for a test

STANDARDIZED TESTING

Standardized testing within South Carolina is not mandatory for homeschoolers. However, some families do find it useful for gauging their child's progress, strengths, weaknesses, or for gaining membership into Delta Mu, our chapter of the National Home School Honor Society.

Standardized testing is offered for those in grades 3-10 using the IOWA Form E Standardized Assessment. Our testing proctor is an experienced homeschool mother and former public-school educator. Seating is limited and registration and payment are required before testing seats are secured and materials ordered.

Our Standardized Testing window is in March and information will be released in the January newsletter.

PLEASE NOTE: Your public school system does not administer yearly standardized tests to homeschooled students registered with an Option 3 association such as Upcountry Homeschool Association.
